Thunderbird Painted Cow Skull

2017 7-3 Cow Skull Thunderbird (14) (600x800)

Every canvas begs for an original work of art to be painted on it and this cow skull is no different.  As I was getting to know this skull, its very wide and angular forehead sent me back to the drawing board more than a few times.  Eventually, the Thunderbird manifested within a circle and diamond – all of which are sacred symbols.  Unlike many common descriptions of the Thunderbird as a dark creature of doom and gloom, my rendition of the Thunderbird represents the Creator as He brings forth food and medicine for the People in the sometimes sudden and violent storms that bring rain and life to the Earth.

‘Broken Arrow’ Painted Cow Skull

2017 3-31 Cow Skull Broken Arrow (4) (649x800)The process of painting a cow skull is a long and sometimes arduous one.  After hours of cleaning and priming a dirty, cracked, and beat up skull I always hang it on the wall behind my desk, sometimes for weeks or even months, as I try to divine what the skull wants to become.  This horned skull hung there for nearly six months before I was ready to tackle it.  Among the many challenges it posed were its very large size and massive horns, which made handling it quite a chore.  And despite its angry-looking brow and threatening appendages, every time I tried to envision what to paint on it, I repeatedly felt the skull asking for a symbol of peace and grace.  In many Native American cultures, the broken arrow indicates the end of hostilities between nations and is a sign of peace or friendly alliance.  The peaceful scene of many teepees surrounding a calm lake under the breadth of majestic mountains symbolizes nations coming together to complete the healing circle.
